One of the most quoted verses in the entire Bible is found in the Gospel of John, chapter 3, verse 16. It reads:
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." — John 3:16
This short sentence captures the very heart of the Christian message: God's love is not passive. It acts. It gives. It sacrifices itself.
The verse comes from a conversation between Jesus and a Pharisee named Nicodemus, who came to Jesus secretly at night. Nicodemus recognised that Jesus was a teacher from God, but he didn't yet fully understand who Jesus was or what he came to do.
Jesus explains it plainly: God loved the world so much that he sent his only Son — not to condemn the world, but to save it.
Three truths stand out in this verse.
First, the scope of God's love. It is not limited to one people, one nation, or one generation. It extends to the whole world — every person, every culture, every corner of the earth. That includes you.
Second, the cost of that love. God gave his "one and only Son." This was not a small gift. It was the most precious thing imaginable. His sacrifice was not an accident or a tragedy — it was an act of deliberate, costly love.
Third, the promise attached to that love. "Whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." The condition is simple: belief. Not perfection, not religious achievement, not worthiness — just faith.
Whether you are reading this as a lifelong Christian, a curious seeker, or someone who has wandered far from faith — this verse is addressed to you. God's love reaches across every distance.
